- High-Performance HEPA Filter (PM 2.5): The filter is composed of a randomly arranged mesh of glass fibers with diameters between 0.5 and 2 microns. In a HEPA filter, the three most important factors are the diameter of the fibers, the thickness of the filter, and the speed of the particles. Although the fiber diameter is between 0.5 and 2 microns, the random arrangement of the mesh allows particles smaller than 0.3 microns to be captured. This is achieved through three mechanisms:
1. Interception: In this process, particles carried by an air stream brush against a fiber and adhere to it.
2. Impact: Larger particles are unable to avoid the fibers as they are carried by an air stream and collide with the fiber. These impacts increase with the reduction in fiber spacing and with the increase in air flow speed.
3. Diffusion: This mainly affects smaller particles (less than 1 micron) as they collide with gas molecules. This is related to "Brownian motion," the random movement observed in particles in a fluid medium (liquid or gas) as a result of collisions with the molecules of that fluid. This also increases the likelihood of the particle being captured by one of the two previous mechanisms. Diffusion is the most dominant when the air flow is slow.
